Benzema´s story was one of what-ifs with France as Real Madrid striker chooses curious exit

France were above the clouds when the news came from Karim Benzema, and a thought came to mind: had he ever been more distant, figuratively or literally, from Les Bleus?

Retiring from international football at the age of 35 is the sort of thing that would not usually raise many eyebrows.

Yet Benzema s announcement, and its timing, caused a fresh quake, even as the tremors from Sunday s World Cup final were still being felt.

Why had it come the day after that momentous game? Was it coming today, win or lose yesterday? Why had Benzema interrupted his own birthday to release the news? Had he waited for the team flight to depart from Qatar before dropping his bombshell?

And why, almost above all, was the announcement so curt? Just 160 characters (in its origi…

France confirm Herve Renard appointment following Diacre revolt

Herve Renard has been confirmed as the new head coach of France s women s team after a player revolt led to the dismissal of Corinne Diacre.

Renard resigned from his role as Saudi Arabia boss earlier this week, having overseen the team s memorable 2-1 victory over eventual winners Argentina at last year s World Cup in Qatar.

The French Football Federation (FFF) sacked Diacre earlier in March after several big-name Bleues players refused to play under her, criticising her management style and treatment of the squad.

Renard was immediately touted as a potential replacement for Diacre, and the 54-year-old s appointment was finalised on Thursday.

His contract with Les Bleues will run until August 2024, allowing him to lead the team at the upcoming World Cup i…

England can win Euro 2016 if the pressure stays off, says Eriksson

Sven-Goran Eriksson believes England are capable of winning Euro 2016, though he hopes the media do not place too much pressure on Roy Hodgson s men.

England have often stuttered on the big stage under great expectations, unable to progress beyond the quarter-finals of a major tournament since reaching the semi-finals at Euro 96, but while wary of past failures, there is a sense of hope led by a new generation.

After qualifying for June s tournament with a 100 per cent record of 10 wins from as many matches, England s stock rose further following Saturday s stunning 3-2 comeback win over Germany in an international friendly.

Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Eric Dier, who have just 17 caps between them, were all on target in Berlin as the tournament in France draws cl…

Best Odds: 19/20

Bookmaker:

With the 2024/25 Championship campaign getting underway this weekend, Leeds will welcome Portsmouth to Elland Road on Saturday lunchtime.

Leeds

Starting with the hosts, suffering major play-off heartbreak at Wembley on May 26th as they fell to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Southampton, Leeds once again have a tremendous amount of pressure on their shoulders this time around. However, although Daniel Farke’s men might have limped their way over the finishing line last season, the former Norwich boss saw his squad sign off their summer preparations with an eye-catching display. Collecting a 2-1 victory against Spanish outfit Valencia, the Yorkshire-based outfit will be looking to use that performance as a platform to build on. Although …

Dutch courage brings England Euro joy

Having guided her native Netherlands to success at Euro 2017 and then on into final of the 2019 World Cup, where they lost to the United States, Wiegman took over the Lionesses in September 2021. Wiegman – a former captain of the Dutch national team during her playing career and also having a spell as a PE teacher – went on to lead England to Euro 2022 glory on home soil with victory over Germany at Wembley last summer. The only defeat so far of Wiegman’s tenure came in a friendly against Australia at Brentford in April – an…

Kyle Walker feels Manchester City owe it to club owner Sheikh Mansour to win the Champions League.

City are eyeing up European club football’s top prize once again after years of near misses in their quest to land the trophy for the first time.

Losing to Chelsea in the final two years ago is the closest they have come, but Wednesday brings another opportunity to reach the showpiece fixture as they host Real Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final.

Manchester City superstar De Bruyne assisted two and scored another as Belgium defeated Germany 3-2 in Tuesday s friendly at RheinEnergieStadion.

That made new coach Tedesco the first Belgium manager to start his tenure with two victories since Rene Vandereycken in 2006.

Tedesco also became the first Belgium boss to see his side score six goals in his first two matches since 1999 when Robert Waseige s new side managed nine from their first pair of outings.

De Bruyne, whose 46 assists for his country are 15 more than any international team-mate since his August 2010 debut, lauded the early work …

Katie Zelem keen to do club and family proud with Manchester United triumph

Manchester United captain Katie Zelem is keenly aware both club and family bragging rights will be on the line when she leads out her side at Wembley for Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup final.

The midfielder’s Women’s Super League-leading Red Devils will look to unseat FA Cup holders Chelsea and claim a first major domestic trophy when they meet at the home of English football, which has sold out for the first time in the competition’s history.

It was at the old Wembley where, 34 years ago, Zelem’s dad Alan likes to remind his daughter he was between the posts for Macclesfield when they lost 1-0 to Telford in the FA Trophy final – a milestone the 27-year-old hopes to overtake with a win this weekend.

Who will pick up this trophy at the end of the week?
