Ki to miss match due to national service

Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yueng will miss his side s Premier League match against Manchester City as he prepares to complete national service in his native South Korea.

Coach Francesco Guidolin confirmed the 27-year-old has been given time off ahead of his military stint, which has been reduced to four weeks from two years thanks to his exploits at the 2012 Olympic Games, where South Korea won bronze.

Ki has to go on military service, so he will not play this weekend because we want him to have some more time for a holiday, Guidolin told the media at his pre-match news conference.

We wanted him to have more days off. This is the reason why we decided [to let him miss Manchester City].

Ki scored his second Premier League goal of the season in Sw…

Could Southampton be the dark horses in the Premier League title race next season?

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman

Leicester City’s shock Premier League title triumph has placed real pressure on a number of promoted and existing clubs to push for more than mere consolidation each season.

All talk has been on which club could be the next to surprise the masses in the top-four, and the answer may well lie with Southampton given what they’ve shown since their promotion from the Championship.

Southmapton in the best shape

It’s gone largely unsaid outside of the Southampton camp that the South Coast side finished in their highest ever position (6th) with the most ever points (63) in their Premier League history, and they’ve improved each season since returning to the top-flight in 2012. Ronald Koeman was the man to lead them to their…

Kevin-Prince Boateng hits out at ´personal´ criticism

Kevin-Prince Boateng has hit back after being criticised in the media, claiming only a strong mind has kept him from being seriously affected by the negative attention.

The former Ghana international has struggled to fulfil his immense potential, enduring difficult spells at Schalke and AC Milan in recent years prior to hitting form again at Las Palmas last season.

Now at Eintracht Frankfurt, Boateng believes that his feelings have not been given any consideration when criticism has become personal.

If you think about Robert Enke s suicide, one per cent of that was to do with the press and the whole hubbub, he told Kicker.

If we take a look at all the articles which were written about me, who knows what I would do if I was not strong in my mind. There …

Wolfsburg sign Gomez from Fiorentina

Wolfsburg have completed the signing of Mario Gomez from Fiorentina for a fee believed to be in the region of €7million. The striker has signed a contract until June 2019.

The Bundesliga side were keen to add another striker to their squad and were previously believed to be close to bringing in Simone Zaza from Juventus.

However, they have now opted to snap up the 31-year-old Gomez instead.

We looked at the possibility of signing Gomez during the winter, so we are all the happier that it has now worked out, commented sporting director Klaus Allofs.

Mario is a striker of international class, who, aside from his playing qualities, also brings an immense amount of experience to our team. As an ambitious player, he fits in here perfectly.

Newcastle United 2 Burnley 0: Magpies cruise after Schar stunner

A spectacular strike from Fabian Schar helped Newcastle United to a 2-0 win over Burnley that further eases their Premier League relegation fears.

The Switzerland centre-back rifled home an unstoppable shot midway through the first half before Sean Longstaff scored his first league goal for the club.

Burnley had battled to a 2-1 win over Tottenham just three days ago, but they rarely troubled Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the second half as a run of four away league games without defeat ended rather meekly.

It took 24 minutes for a shot on target to arrive, but it was worth the wait for Newcastle fans, with Schar blasting a stunning effort in off the right-hand post from 25 yards out.

Dubravka blocked a Chris Wood effort as Burnley threatened a …

Milan to offer Donnarumma new deal

AC Milan are keen to bind Gianluigi Donnarumma to a new contract, according to reports in Italy.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper was on the verge of leaving San Siro in the summer of 2017 and he faced a huge amount of pressure from the fans, before finally deciding to pen a new deal that s set to keep him with the Rossoneri until the summer of 2021.

Italian media company SportMediaSet claim the club have now made contact with Mino Raiola, who represents the young shot-stopper, and they are ready to offer him a small improvement on his current salary. It means that, if he signs, he would be earning the sum of €6 million per year.

Donnarumma has been seen as potentially the next in the long line of great Italian goalkeepers which included the likes of Dino Zoff, Walt…
